Issued to mark the 135th anniversary of the National Bank of Romania, founded in 1880 as the country's first central bank and modeled in part on the Belgian National Bank. Romania was one of the later European states to establish a formal central banking institution, and the BNR's early decades were defined by the challenge of stabilizing the leu against chronic trade deficits and the monetary disruptions of the Balkan Wars.
