Monica Lovinescu spent decades broadcasting into Romania from Paris on Radio Free Europe, her cultural commentary explicitly banned by the Securitate. In 1977, agents acting on Ceaușescu's orders attacked her outside her apartment, leaving her hospitalized — an assault that drew rare public condemnation from Western intellectuals including Eugène Ionesco and Yves Montand. She refused to return to Romania until after 1989, and even then remained a deeply uncomfortable figure for post-communist elites reluctant to reckon with their own collaborationist histories.
This issue is part of Romania's ongoing commemorative silver program honoring cultural and intellectual figures systematically suppressed under communist rule.
