Gheorghe Șincai spent years compiling his monumental chronicle of Romanian history, *Hronica românilor*, yet never saw it published in his lifetime — the manuscript circulated in handwritten copies after Austrian authorities suppressed it, and Șincai died in 1816 still unable to secure its release. He was also briefly imprisoned by the Greek Catholic church hierarchy, a consequence of his relentless advocacy for Transylvanian Romanian rights under Habsburg rule. The National Bank of Romania has issued a number of .999 silver commemoratives in this weight class honoring figures of the Transylvanian School, of which Șincai is among the most politically charged.
