Gheorghe Țițeica (1873–1939) was one of Romania's most significant mathematicians, best known for founding the field of centro-affine differential geometry and for the class of surfaces that bear his name. This issue appeared as part of Romania's long-running numismatic program honoring national figures in science and culture — a series that has produced well over a hundred silver commemoratives since the 1990s.
Țițeica's international reputation was considerable during his lifetime; he was an invited lecturer at major European congresses and helped establish Romanian mathematics as a serious presence abroad.
