Romania qualified for UEFA Euro 1996 in England by finishing top of their qualifying group, which included France — a genuine upset at the time. The tournament itself ended in the group stage for Romania, but the qualifying campaign gave the Banca Națională a credible hook for this commemorative issue. Romania had previously struck a parallel 100 Lei silver version of the same type; this nickel-plated steel piece was the circulation-accessible counterpart.
