Issued by the National Bank of Romania as part of its ongoing numismatic program commemorating Carol I, the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen prince who was installed as ruler of the Romanian United Principalities in 1866 and later became the country's first king in 1881. His reign of nearly five decades oversaw the consolidation of Romanian independence, formally recognized at the Congress of Berlin in 1878 following the Russo-Turkish War.
