Romania's 10 lei denomination entered circulation in July 2005 as part of the country's redenomination, which replaced the old leu at a ratio of 10,000 old lei to 1 new leu — one of the more dramatic currency resets in post-communist Europe, driven by decades of accumulated inflation that had pushed everyday transactions into the millions and billions. The paper version preceded the polymer issue that would eventually replace it for the same denomination.
Paper examples from 2005 saw heavy use and tend to show it; the transition period created genuine demand pressure as the public adjusted to new values.
