Alexandru Macedonski spent much of his career in bitter public conflict with Mihai Eminescu, Romania's dominant literary figure, and died in 1920 largely unrecognized by the mainstream establishment that had marginalized him for decades. The symbolist and Parnassian currents he championed were considered foreign affectations by nationalist critics, a verdict history has largely reversed.
Romania's commemorative silver program has issued pieces tied to literary figures with some regularity since the 1990s, though Macedonski's inclusion came unusually late given his stature in Romanian modernist poetry.
