Romania's monetary unification followed the political unification of 1918, but the actual consolidation of currencies circulating across Transylvania, Wallachia, and Moldavia into a single Romanian leu system was a drawn-out process completed through the 1920s. The State Notes of the Romanian National Bank gradually displaced the Austro-Hungarian krone and other transitional instruments still moving through the newly expanded territory.
The centenary falls in 2021, a century after the 1921 legislative framework that formally regularized exchange and retired competing instruments from the unified state's economy.
