Obverse description The full coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia is displayed prominently in the centre of the field against a mirror-polished proof background. The shield is quartered, depicting a rising sun in the upper half and a lion passant and griffin in the lower quarters, supported by a rampant lion to the left and a griffin to the right, with an oak branch and ribbon at the base. Three five-pointed stars appear above the shield, symbolising the three historical regions of Latvia. The legend LATVIJAS arcs along the upper rim and REPUBLIKA along the lower rim in raised Latin characters.
