Reverse description The field is divided diagonally into two contrasting areas evoking the Latvian national flag: the upper portion features horizontal striations on a frosted background, while the lower portion is mirror-polished. A stylised Latvian decorative cross motif (known as the jumis or fertility symbol) is centred at the intersection of the two zones. The denomination 10 LATU appears in large numerals and text to the right of centre in the lower field. The commemorative dates 1918 and 1993, flanking a small jumis ornament, are inscribed along the lower left, marking the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the Latvian Republic.

Additional information

Latvia declared independence from the Soviet Union in May 1990, but the international community largely withheld recognition until August 1991, following the failed Moscow coup. This coin commemorates the original 1918 proclamation rather than the 1990–91 restoration — a deliberate political choice that framed Latvian sovereignty as continuous and uninterrupted across the Soviet decades, legally voiding the occupation rather than acknowledging a fresh start.

The lats itself had been reintroduced only months before this issue, replacing the transitional Latvian ruble in March 1993.
