Issued as part of Latvia's ambitious commemorative program following restored independence, this piece honors Riga's medieval mercantile history during the Hanseatic League period, when the city functioned as one of the dominant trading hubs on the eastern Baltic. Riga joined the Hanse formally in 1282, and its merchants controlled the flow of furs, wax, and grain from the Russian interior westward into northern Europe for generations.
KM#36 was struck at the Finnish Mint in Vantaa, which produced the majority of Latvia's commemorative silver issues during the 1990s while the country rebuilt its own monetary infrastructure after Soviet dissolution.
