Tannu Tuva's 1924 currency issue is among the more obscure events in twentieth-century monetary history. The territory had been a Russian protectorate since 1914 and declared itself the Tuvan People's Republic in 1921 under Soviet guidance — technically independent, though Soviet influence was total. This note was part of the first domestic currency series issued by that nominally sovereign state, replacing earlier Mongolian and Russian imperial notes still circulating in the region.
The series was printed in the Soviet Union. Tuva was formally annexed by the USSR in 1944, and surviving examples of the 1924 issue are genuinely rare — the total population was under 65,000 at the time of issue, limiting original distribution considerably.
