Angola's 2005 gold commemorative program marked the thirtieth anniversary of independence from Portugal, declared on November 11, 1975 — the same day Cuban troops and Soviet-supplied weaponry were already engaged in a civil war that would consume the country for another 27 years. The kwanza itself had been redenominated multiple times by 2005, a direct consequence of inflation that had, at its worst in the early 1990s, exceeded 4,000 percent annually.
KM# 105.1 distinguishes this from a paired variant in the series, both struck in fractional gold at the Vienna Mint under contract.
