Malawi issued a series of football-themed coins ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany, marketed primarily to overseas collectors rather than domestic circulation. The Reserve Bank was one of several small African central banks that licensed FIFA branding during this period as a revenue-generating exercise — the coins were legal tender in name only, priced well above face value from the moment of issue.
