Malawi's UNESCO commemorative series exploited a common late-1990s and early-2000s licensing arrangement in which small nations with negligible numismatic traditions issued collector coins tied to World Heritage Sites having no geographic or historical connection to the issuing country. Monte San Giorgio, the Triassic-period fossil site straddling the Swiss-Italian border, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2003 — this coin followed within a year, almost certainly produced by a European contract mint for the collector and medallic market rather than any Malawian domestic purpose.
