Issued as part of Malawi's prolific early-2000s wildlife series, which the Reserve Bank produced in considerable volume through European minting contractors targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation. The Darwin's frog — Rhinoderma darwinii — is native to Chilean and Argentine forest streams, making its appearance on a Malawian coin a matter of commercial numismatic logic rather than any geographic or cultural connection.
Darwin first documented the species during the Beagle voyage; the male's brooding behavior, raising tadpoles inside its vocal sac, wasn't fully described until decades later.
