Edward VIII's abdication in December 1936 was constitutionally unprecedented in the modern British monarchy — he surrendered the throne voluntarily, without death, incapacitation, or forced removal, to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson. The British government under Baldwin made clear that Simpson would not be accepted as queen consort, leaving Edward no institutional path forward. He had reigned for 325 days without ever being crowned.
Malawi's commemorative issues of the late 1990s drew heavily on British imperial history, a reflection of its Commonwealth ties since independence in 1964.
