Zambia redenominated its currency in 2013, lopping three zeros off the old kwacha to introduce the rebased series — this note belongs to the first generation of denominations issued under that reform. The rebase was driven partly by practical frustration: by 2012, the largest circulating note was worth roughly twenty US cents, and ATM cassettes simply couldn't hold enough bills for meaningful withdrawals.
Giesecke & Devrient have supplied Zambia's banknote printing needs across multiple series, and the 2015 issue continued that relationship. P#58 is among the lower denominations in the current series, meaning it absorbed heavy circulation wear.
