Aanvullende informatie

Malawi redenominated its currency in 2012, with the kwacha losing roughly half its value against the US dollar almost immediately after the float was introduced in May of that year — a policy shift forced partly by IMF pressure and the suspension of donor budget support under President Bingu wa Mutharika. This coin entered circulation into that instability.

The stainless steel clad iron composition was a cost-driven choice made as rising metal prices rendered earlier alloys uneconomical across sub-Saharan mints during the 2000s.
