The Reserve Bank of Malawi opened in 1965, just a year after independence, and the kwacha itself only replaced the Malawian pound in 1971 — meaning this note belongs to the currency's earliest years, when the central bank was still establishing its operational footing. Bradbury Wilkinson had a long record printing for newly independent African states, and Malawi was a steady client through this period.
Pick 12 is the scarcer of the early 10 Kwacha types; the 1973–1975 window was short, and the series was superseded relatively quickly as the bank updated its security specifications.
