Mehmed VI ascended to the Ottoman throne in July 1918, just months before the Armistice of Mudros ended the empire's involvement in World War I. These coins were struck during the death spiral of a dynasty — by the time the last pieces entered circulation, Allied warships were anchored in the Bosphorus and the empire had lost nearly all its Arab territories. Mehmed VI would be formally deposed in 1922, becoming the last Ottoman sultan.
KM#817 is frequently found with weak central strikes, a chronic issue on late Ottoman silver owing to deteriorating equipment at the Constantinople mint during the war years.
