Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran through the 1970s and recruited dozens of countries to mint agricultural-themed pieces intended to raise awareness of global food production. Turkey's participation produced several FAO issues across this period. These coins saw genuine circulation rather than existing purely as collector items, which the aluminum composition — cheap, lightweight, practical — was specifically chosen to facilitate.
