Above the fingerprint, the name of Louis Braille is rendered in Braille script as a matrix of raised dots occupying the upper-central field. The circular legend 'LOUIS BRAILLE 1809.-2009.' runs along the upper periphery in Latin characters, commemorating the bicentenary of his birth. A border of raised beads encircles the entire design. |

Issued to mark the bicentenary of Louis Braille's birth in Coupvray, France, this coin commemorates the man who, blinded at age three following a workshop accident, developed his tactile reading system by age fifteen while a student at the Institution Nationale des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris. Croatia was among dozens of nations that issued commemoratives in 2009–2010 for the anniversary, UNESCO having designated 2009 a year of recognition. At 0.5 grams, it is among the smallest gold issues the Croatian National Bank has produced.
