Nordic gold — the proprietary alloy developed by the Nordic Mint consortium in the early 1990s — was adopted specifically to defeat the flood of counterfeit circulation coinage that had plagued Scandinavian economies through the 1980s. Its distinctive color and resistance to discoloration made fakes far easier to detect. Sweden was among the first adopters, and this denomination carried the alloy through most of the decade before Sweden's broader coinage reform effectively rendered the series obsolete ahead of ongoing Riksbank restructuring.
