Sveriges Riksbank introduced this note under the 1873 Scandinavian Monetary Union agreement, which pegged the Swedish krona to gold alongside the Danish and Norwegian currencies at a shared rate — the union's only genuinely multinational achievement before it quietly collapsed decades later. Riksbanken had been issuing paper since 1661, making it the oldest central bank note-issuer in the world, which did little to reassure a Swedish public that still preferred coin for everyday transactions in the 1870s.
Printed domestically in Stockholm rather than contracted to one of the major foreign security printers then favored by smaller European states — a deliberate choice reflecting the bank's institutional confidence and long in-house printing tradition.
