The Faroese emergency issues of 1940 exist because Britain occupied the islands in April of that year — days after the German invasion of Denmark — cutting the territory off from its Danish currency supply entirely. The local administration, Færø Amt, was left to improvise. These notes were overprinted or produced under wartime conditions with London doing the actual printing work, an arrangement that reflects the islands' odd administrative limbo: technically still a Danish county, practically a British protectorate for the duration.
