Issued as part of Denmark's ongoing commemorative crown series, this piece marks the 200th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth — an event the Danish government treated with unusual seriousness, coordinating releases across postal, cultural, and numismatic programs throughout 2005. Andersen was born in Odense on April 2, 1805, the son of a shoemaker, and spent much of his early life navigating social rejection before achieving international recognition largely outside Denmark first.
