Additional information

Issued to mark Margrethe II's accession following the death of her father Frederik IX on January 14, 1972, this coin was among the first official numismatic recognitions of Denmark's new queen. Margrethe's succession itself had only been made possible by a 1953 constitutional amendment altering succession laws to permit female inheritance of the throne — passed in part because Frederik had no male heirs.

The .800 silver standard was already being phased out of Danish coinage by this point, making this one of the later issues in that alloy.
