This piece belongs to Denmark's fairy tale coin series, issued to mark the bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth — a programme that ran across 2005 and continued into subsequent years with select gold issues. The Nightingale story, set in imperial China, was one of Andersen's own favourites among his works, reportedly because it addressed the tension between artificial courtly praise and genuine artistic worth, a theme he felt personally.
The .900 gold specification follows the traditional crown gold standard Denmark had used for commemorative issues since the late nineteenth century.
