The Nightingale coin belongs to a six-piece fairy tale series issued by the Royal Danish Mint between 2006 and 2008, each piece drawing from the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. The series was released in the years immediately following the 2005 bicentennial of Andersen's birth, extending the commemorative momentum into regular circulation coinage. Denmark's choice to run the program across multiple years rather than a single commemorative release was a deliberate strategy to sustain collector interest.
Margrethe II's fourth portrait, used here, was designed by Mogens Møller and introduced in 2003.
