Kings Bay Kull Company operated the Norwegian coal mining settlement at Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard, and its scrip functioned as the sole practical currency within that closed community — workers had nowhere else to spend wages and no reason to hold Norwegian kroner on the archipelago. The company issued its own notes across several denominations to settle accounts at the company store and canteen, a system typical of remote Arctic industrial operations where the employer controlled all retail infrastructure.
The KB6r reference denotes a recognized variety, though documentation on the precise distinguishing feature remains inconsistent across catalogs. A mining disaster in 1962 killed 21 men and effectively ended the coal operation; notes from the later years of this issue range are consequently scarce relative to earlier printings.
