Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani issued its own scrip currency for use exclusively at Longyearbyen, where the company effectively ran a closed economy — workers were paid partly in these tokens and spent them at company-owned facilities. Norwegian state banknotes were not practical tender in a community this remote and this dependent on a single employer.

The "r" suffix on the Pick reference denotes a remainder, and these are the more commonly encountered form. Issued examples with genuine transaction cancellations are considerably scarcer. The scrip series ran through the postwar rebuilding period after German forces destroyed much of the settlement's infrastructure during their 1943 withdrawal from Svalbard.
