Georg von Kuenburg served as Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1586 until his death in 1587 — one of the shortest episcopates in the see's history. This coin was almost certainly struck within that single calendar year of his rule, making the entire issue inherently short-lived. The Salzburg mint was among the most prolific in the Holy Roman Empire during the sixteenth century, sustained largely by the silver output of the nearby Gastein and Rauris alpine mines, which gave the archbishops both the metal and the political leverage to strike their own coinage continuously.
