Maximilian IV Joseph had ruled Bavaria for less than two years when these kreuzers were struck, having inherited the electorate in 1799 amid the chaos of the French Revolutionary Wars — French troops had occupied Munich itself just years prior. The half-silver alloy reflects Bavaria's strained treasury, a consequence of repeated wartime requisitions and indemnities imposed by the French.
Within four years of this issue, Maximilian would be elevated to King of Bavaria by Napoleon, rendering the electoral title on these coins obsolete almost immediately.
