Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1560 to 1586, one of the longer tenures of the Counter-Reformation period in the region. His administration coincided with sustained pressure from Protestant movements that had taken deep root in the Alpine territories, and his coinage program reflected a deliberate assertion of ecclesiastical authority at a moment when that authority was being actively contested. The 10 Kreuzer denomination placed silver in everyday hands — not a prestige issue, but a working coin for a fractious time.
