Franz I spent the final years of his reign governing through Metternich's apparatus rather than personal initiative, and the coinage of this period reflects institutional continuity over royal ambition. The half-fine silver standard had been fixed following the fiscal wreckage of the Napoleonic Wars, during which Austria declared state bankruptcy twice — in 1811 and again in 1816 — forcing a complete restructuring of the currency system that these pieces descend from.
Franz died in March 1835, making the final year of this type's production a transitional one bridging his reign and that of Ferdinand I.
