Trial strikes in aluminium were produced by the Vienna mint in the late nineteenth century to test new compositions as silver prices fluctuated across the Austro-Hungarian monetary union. Hungary's political demands following the 1867 Ausgleich meant Budapest maintained a distinct coinage identity, and even experimental pieces required nominal Hungarian authorization. This particular aluminium trial was never approved for circulation — the 10 Kreuzer denomination was abolished entirely in 1892 when Austria-Hungary decimalized its currency and introduced the Krone system, rendering the piece obsolete before it could ever be reconsidered.
