This two-year issue coincides precisely with the Ausgleich of 1867, the Compromise that restructured the Habsburg Empire into the dual Austro-Hungarian monarchy and granted Hungary its own legislative and financial institutions. The Hungarian Mint at Körmöcbánya — one of Europe's oldest continuously operating mints — resumed striking coins under distinct Hungarian authority almost immediately, making this 10 Kreuzer among the first issues to reflect that newly codified autonomy.

The .400 fineness places it firmly in the debased billon range that characterized small-denomination coinage across Central Europe as silver was increasingly reserved for trade and larger denominations.
