Charles Theodore ruled Bavaria as Electoral Vicar (*Reichsvikar*) during the interregnum following the death of Emperor Joseph II in February 1790 — a constitutional role that temporarily granted the Bavarian Elector quasi-imperial authority over the western districts of the Holy Roman Empire while a new emperor was elected. The Vikariat coinage issued under this brief mandate was a deliberate exercise of that elevated prerogative, as the right to strike coins was among the most politically charged privileges the office conferred.
Leopold II was elected and crowned within months, ending the interregnum and with it the legal basis for further Vikariat issues.
