Charles Theodore inherited the Bavarian electorate in 1777 upon the extinction of the Wittelsbach-Sulzbach line, triggering the War of the Bavarian Succession against Frederick the Great. His Palatinate mint continued striking Konventionskreuzer coinage through the political upheaval, operating under the Convention of 1753 that standardized silver coinage across much of the Holy Roman Empire at 20 gulden to the Cologne mark. The four-year window of this issue closes precisely when Austro-Prussian hostilities formally ended with the Peace of Teschen in 1779.
