Charles Philip, Elector Palatine, spent much of his reign embroiled in the dispute over Heidelberg's Heiliggeistkirche — he had demanded the nave returned to Catholic use in 1706, a move that triggered sustained diplomatic pressure from Protestant powers and shaped the confessional politics of the Upper Rhine for decades. By 1735 he was in his eighties and the electorate was effectively being administered around him. He died the following year, ending the Simmern line of Wittelsbachs and transferring the Palatinate to the Sulzbach branch under Charles Theodore.
