Zofingen was a small Reformed city in the Aargau, part of the Swiss Confederation but subject to Bernese overlordship — a political tension that made independent municipal coinage something of a statement. By the early eighteenth century, most Swiss city-states of comparable size had abandoned the practical ambition of striking their own silver, yet Zofingen persisted. This 10 Kreuzer issue of 1722 falls within the city's final period of autonomous coinage before such rights became effectively obsolete under the consolidated cantonal structures that followed.
