Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg was not a typical prince-bishop. A humanist diplomat who had served as secretary and chief political operative to Emperor Maximilian I, he was rewarded with the Salzburg see in 1519 — a deeply unpopular appointment that coincided almost exactly with the outbreak of the Peasants' War in the region. Lang's aggressive fiscal policies and perceived indifference to reform demands contributed directly to the 1525 siege of the Hohensalzburg fortress, during which he was effectively trapped for months. These Zehner were struck across that turbulent stretch.
