1622 places this coin squarely in the Kipper und Wipperzeit — the catastrophic debasement crisis that swept the Holy Roman Empire during the opening years of the Thirty Years' War. Municipal mints across the Empire, Nuremberg included, came under enormous pressure to reduce silver content while maintaining face values, funding war contributions and exploiting arbitrage in metal markets. Nuremberg's city council resisted more aggressively than most, but surviving assay records show even their output degraded noticeably by mid-1622.
