Obverse description Within a raised inner circle, the municipal arms of Augsburg: the celebrated pine cone device set upon a pedestal base, rendered in high relief with finely detailed scale-like texture. The field surrounding the device is smooth. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer rim, interrupted at the top by the Roman numeral date, reading AVGVSTA VINDELICORVM with the year expressed in Roman numerals (e.g. MDLXI for 1561). The overall style is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century South German hammered coinage.
