The shield is surmounted by an elaborate open crown with foliate finials. The circumferential legend in Latin reads MONETA REIPUB·BERNENS·, with the date 1790 completing the inscription. Bern's 10 Kreuzer issues of this period were struck under the authority of the city-republic's mint masters at a time when the patrician oligarchy controlling Bern was also quietly accumulating one of the most substantial sovereign financial reserves in Europe.
