The Slovak National Uprising of August 1944 was one of the largest armed resistance actions in occupied Europe, involving tens of thousands of partisans and regular Slovak army units before German forces suppressed it in October of that year. This coin was issued on the twentieth anniversary of that event, part of a broader Czechoslovak commemorative program that used such anniversaries as deliberate political touchstones during the normalization pressures of the early 1960s.
The .500 fine silver content reflects postwar Czechoslovak fiscal conservatism in commemorative coinage — half silver rather than the higher fineness of prewar issues.
