Magyar Általános Hitelbank was one of Hungary's largest commercial banks, but this note was not issued by its Budapest headquarters — it came from the Győr branch acting on local authority during the chaotic interregnum of 1919, when the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monetary system left provincial banks scrambling to cover acute small-denomination shortages. These emergency issues, known collectively as szükségpénz, proliferated across Hungary that year as central supply lines for banknotes broke down entirely.

The Győr branch's validating stamp is the only security element standing between this and a blank piece of paper — which tells you everything about the monetary conditions that made it necessary.
