Uralmashinostroy was the construction trust responsible for building Uralmash, the giant machine-building plant outside Sverdlovsk — one of the flagship projects of the First Five-Year Plan. During construction, the remote site lacked adequate banking infrastructure, so the trust issued its own scrip to pay workers, redeemable only at company stores and canteens. These notes circulated entirely within the construction zone and were explicitly illegal under Soviet law, which nominally prohibited parallel currencies — yet the state tolerated them as a practical necessity on isolated industrial sites throughout the early 1930s.
Survivors are rare. Most scrip of this type was demonetized and discarded once permanent banking facilities arrived on site.
